When we watch the news and see some of the intense and horrific situations in which people around the world live, we often forget to stop and remember the crew who bring that news and those visuals to us. The people who so often are risking their lives to do so.
The Rory Peck Trust supports freelance news gathers and their families worldwide in times of need and promotes their welfare and safety. It was set up back in 1995, two years after Rory was killed filming in Moscow. His wife and close friends wanted to provide help and support for the family of cameraman and woman who no one else would. This totally independent trust relies on income from grants, sponsorship, and charitable donations, so when Richard Martin Lighting were asked to provide lights for the annual awards again we were more than happy to be involved.
Lighting Designer Malcolm Reed chose a mixture of LED and moving heads for the awards, held in London’s BFI National Film Theatre. Pixel Par 90’s, GLP Impressions and Alpha Spot 300’s created a classic and elegant design.
When I recently asked Malcolm about his choice of specification he told me ‘The reasoning behind this choice of lighting is quite simple, the theatre has very little power available as the normal use is a cinema and I was limited to a few 13 amp sockets scattered around the auditorium. For me LED’s are just the thing, the GLP’s enabled me not only to create various colour moods but I also had the versatility of being able to move the lights from area to area of the auditorium, giving excitement and atmosphere of glitz and glamour as nominees step up onto the stage to get presented with an award. I used the Alpha Beams in a similar way but also to light up what really was a very dull and boring ceiling. The pixel par 90’s gave up lights of various colour around the auditorium picking out some of the architecture. ‘
